Combatir en el fin del mundo
Norteamericanos y británicos no han tenido mucha suerte en la última reunión del mando militar de la OTAN. Han pedido más tropas para Afganistán al resto de países y sólo han recibido amables negativas. Deberían prestar atención a los comentarios del mayor británico John Godfrey:
"In an age when a modern army depends so heavily on technology to win its battles, the Taliban could (and have) re-taught us many of the basic principles of soldiering. But they are also not beyond using human shields."Any local who has been suspected of having spoken with the soldiers is likely to be immediately interrogated and some may be executed. It is little wonder that the local population can be very wary. We have also been amazed to discover from the elders that many isolated villages believe that we are Soviet troops still occupying the country".
Quizá el problema se mida en euros, no en soldados. La mayor frustración de Godfrey es no tener el dinero suficiente para llevar a cabo su misión. En Irak tenía un montón a su disposición. En Afganistán sus hombres sólo podían regalar "dulces y chocolate" a los niños.
Y no se ganan guerras repartiendo dulces.
