Procesado
Un tribunal militar israelí ha ordenado el procesamiento del capitán que remató de varios disparos a una niña de 13 años en Gaza. Los hechos ocurrieron el 5 de octubre. El cadáver de la niña tenía 15 impactos de bala.
La investigación preliminar del Ejército se había limitado a retirarle de sus funciones por su incapacidad para dirigir su unidad, pero no le había imputado ningún delito por la muerte de Imán Al Hamás. El jefe del Ejército no encontró más motivos para castigar al oficial y el ministro de Defensa afirmó entonces públicamente que no podía creer que un mando militar se hubiera comportado de esa manera:
"I cannot believe that a company commander in the IDF could act in such a manner and I hope for the sake of Israel and the IDF that the findings stipulated in the investigation are final," Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said on Channel 2's Meet the Press on Saturday.El ministro puede ahora empezar a creérselo. En esta ocasión, el capitán ha sido procesado por cinco cargos, entre los que se encuentra utilizar su arma de forma ilegal, obstrucción a la justicia y conducta impropia de un oficial. Un programa de la televisión israelí emitió hace unos días la grabación de las comunicaciones internas de los militares, en la que se oía al oficial decir que había "verificado la muerte". Se trata de una expresión empleada por los soldados para confirmar que han acabado con un sospechoso. El tribunal ha dicho que la ley militar no incluye como delito esta práctica no autorizada, por lo que le han procesado por uso ilegal del arma. Según Haaretz:
He is not being charged with manslaughter (homicidio) since there is no evidence that R.'s bullets were those that killed the girl. The decision not to charge the other soldiers at the outpost was because they acted on the assumption that the suspicious figure was a terrorist and not a young girl. R. however, is heard in the tape specifically saying he shot "the girl," and had heard on the communications radio that the figure was a young girl.La niña se dirigía a la escuela a las siete de la mañana y llevaba una mochila con los libros. Los soldados que le dispararon inicialmente dijeron después que creyeron que se acercaba a su puesto para colocar una bomba. Estaba a unos 70 metros de distancia.
Tanto en este caso como en el de la profanación de cadáveres de palestinos conocido hace unos días, la versión oficial del Ejército suele consistir en describir estos actos como hechos excepcionales que no son representativos de la conducta de los militares en los teritorios palestinos. Lo malo es que ha habido demasiados hechos excepcionales en los últimos cuatro años. Hay un patrón de conducta común, según el editorial del diario Haaretz:
The IDF spokesperson, in response to Yedioth Ahronoth, spoke about the fact that soldiers are operating in a "complex reality" - a phrase that betrays understanding for the soldiers' behavior. But this complex reality is in fact quite simple. For decades the IDF and the settlers have acted as they pleased in the territories, while the Palestinians' image as human beings with rights and with a face has gradually diminished. The process of dehumanization has reached a peak during the last four years, and certainly where there is no respect for human life, there can be no respect for the dead.
